So you’ve decluttered. Lots of stuff went in the bin. Yet, your home still feels somewhat ‘busy’. Sure, you could chuck a few more things but you need them, right? But your home still isn’t the sanctuary you’ve been dreaming of…Dilemma, dilemma. The mindfuck is real.
We’ve all been there. And if that’s you, here is a fun little trick:
You’re going to try what a truly clutter-free room feels like.
Grab a few boxes and pick a room. Mark your boxes: ‘donate’, ‘throw away’, ‘sell’. We’re not actually throwing anything away so don’t worry! Just relax and have fun with it.
Look around that room – if you could magically let go of emotional attachment, worries and guilt and your possessions could just vanish and be erased from your memory, how much stuff would you like to have in an ideal world?
(We’re just dreaming here, we’re not actually throwing stuff out)
Let’s take a bedroom as an example:
- Maybe you’d love to have a ‘breezy’ wardrobe where stacks of clothes don’t touch each other and hangers have space in between and aren’t squashed.
- Maybe you’d like to stack your underwear in rows rather than on top of each other but you have too many pairs of socks and knickers to make that happen.
- Or maybe you’d love to get rid of that creepy teddy that your mother-in-law gave you but you’re too afraid to hurt her feelings.
And now the fun bit – go ahead and make it happen.
Remember – you’re not throwing anything away. You’re just intuitively sorting your items and deciding which ones to leave and which ones should go in a box.
Keep putting stuff in boxes until you’ve reached the level where you think: “Yes!! This room feels amazing now, I LOVE IT SO MUCH!”
Now – seal the boxes and put them in another room or a garage. Enjoy your new clutter-free room for a month. Really try it out and feel how good it feels to be in that room.
After a month, decide whether you want to ‘keep’ your new room or whether you want to bring your stuff back in. You’ll most likely not want to give up the new breezy room, in which case go ahead and get rid of your boxed up stuff – for real this time (don’t open the ‘donate’ and ‘throw away’ boxes if you think you’ll be tempted!).
The point of this little trick is to experience living with less. Nobody can tell you how good it feels until you feel it for yourself!
Give it a go and let me know how it went – I’m very curious if that trick worked for you!
